Essay 001
Sam Altman recently said that we are now “like” in the singularity. Yet almost no one around me seems to know what that means, including me. we are supposedly living through one of the most important transformations in human history without fully understanding what is happening.
The technological singularity is the theoretical point when technological progress becomes so rapid and powerful that ordinary humans can no longer reliably predict, understand, or control what comes next.
This raises an uncomfortable question and makes me wonder: Was the possibility of losing control over artificial intelligence always a part of the plan?
Why are American technocrats and technology companies constantly pushing society toward a future that the public does not fully understand? There seems to be an intentional avoidance of the conversations that truly matter. Our leaders promise technological miracles, economic stability, and greater prosperity while often ignoring how these changes could affect the natural state of what it means to be human.
Artificial general intelligence, or AGI, refers to AI with broad, human-level competence across many areas. Artificial superintelligence would go further, becoming more capable than humans in nearly every intellectual field.
The singularity describes the civilization-changing acceleration that could follow the arrival of superintelligence, recursive self-improvement, and deeper integration between humans and machines.
In a 1958 tribute to mathematician John von Neumann, Stanisław Ulam recalled a conversation about accelerating technological progress approaching an “essential singularity,” after which human affairs could no longer continue in their familiar form. This is generally considered one of the first major uses of the word “singularity” in its modern technological sense.
Computer scientist and science-fiction writer Vernor Vinge developed the idea further in his 1983 writing and especially in his 1993 essay, “The Coming Technological Singularity.” He argued that several developments could produce a world beyond ordinary human understanding, including superhuman artificial intelligence, enhanced human intelligence, and networks that function like a greater collective mind.
Ray Kurzweil later brought the concept into popular culture with his 2005 book *The Singularity Is Near*. He emphasized exponential technological growth and predicted an eventual merging of human beings with machines.
However, the singularity is not only a technological question. It is also a political, philosophical, and spiritual one.
Would rule by an extraordinarily intelligent and supposedly benevolent system represent salvation—or would it become a form of perfect authoritarianism? Would a system that understands us better than we understand ourselves protect our freedom, or quietly eliminate the need for human choice?
Being fundamentally changed does not necessarily mean that human nature will disappear. People may still desire love, meaning, recognition, community, creativity, and purpose. However, the conditions under which we experience those things could change completely.
The singularity is therefore not simply something that might happen to humanity. It is something humanity may gradually build, govern, resist, distribute, or surrender to through the choices being made right now.
Human beings still have an essential role in shaping information, culture, values, and desire. In this emerging world, awareness matters more than ever. People must understand what is happening around them and connect their personal sense of meaning with the future society is creating.
We should not build the future around the belief that human beings are perfect. We clearly are not. But neither should we assume that humanity is incapable of guiding itself and must surrender its future to machines, corporations, or a small group of powerful leaders.
We may need guidance, and we must learn how to guide one another. But we should be consciously led toward the future—not blindly pushed into it.
